2021 was a year to remember and we are looking forward to beautiful lambs in the Spring, but hopefully we'll never be foolish enough to keep so many rams ever again! Yes, they're majestic, and yes, each of them offers a genetic quality that enhances our flock, but rams are a pain. Plain and simple, five rams caused some headaches, but we are excited to see the results come April. Here's a quick rundown on our 2021 Breeding Rams.
RBR RAM CAPER 338E
Caper is a black SGGM badgerface. His contributions are his unique coloring, high quality fleece, excellent parasite resistance, hardiness and his wonderful gentle temperament and agreeability. His offspring are best suited for fiber flocks as his lambs are usually smaller and take longer to reach a processing weight. He was bred to Harriett, Ruthie, Jemima, and Tabitha for 2022 lambs.
LINGER RAM B2H 295F MOSES
Moses is a black grey gentle giant originating from 8000 ft in Colorado. We had seen pictures of his sire, Eirik, and knew we wanted his sheer mass in our flock. We love Icelandics, but had struggled to achieve the muscling and size we needed to produce high quality grass-fed lamb capable of satisfying customers. We purchased Moses with the sole intention of adding that size to our flock. We were hit with a drought in August and struggled to bale enough hay to met the unexpected demand. We had never fed hay before September and were unprepared. Much of our flock lost conditioning by the time September arrived, but when we did our Fall weigh-in Moses was at 216 lbs. This is a result of his natural thriftiness (something we have seen in all our Lingerfold sheep and descendants) and also his sheer size. When Moses is eating well, he ranges between 225-240 lbs. This was at three years old. His offspring is hearty, large and well-muscled. His wool is coarse and his horns are narrow. He is gentle enough that we file them with a rasp and that has been enough. The narrow horns have been offset by breeding him to ewes with wide horns, but his strongest trait continues to be producing fast growing, extremely large market lambs.
