There is nothing cookie cutter about a flock of Icelandic sheep & this extends to the sheepskins we harvest each Fall.
We wash, prep & salt the pelts on the farm before sending them to 100% natural, chemical-free, women-owned tannery in Wisconsin. These sheepskins are not easy to tan because the combination of long lock length & a dual coat make felting a possibility.
Icelandic sheepskins are best processed entirely by hand. This means they must be prepared, salted, cleaned, tanned & stretched all by hand. The little pieces of pasture grass & woodland twigs must be washed out carefully to avoid damaging the beautiful curls. When you see sheepskins that are all ‘fluff’ without any of the characteristic crimp, wave or curl then you’ll know they’ve been brushed to conserve time, or because the pelt arrived with too much vegetative matter, or matting. To say this process is time consuming & a labor of love is an understatement, but when they’re finished they never fail to steal your breath away!
Our flock lives an idyllic, stress-free life on pasture & woodlands. They have 24/7 year round access to pasture. They are entirely grass fed & we’ve grown our own herbicide & pesticide free hay for over twenty years. As a working sheep farm, a yearly harvest is part of shepherding so these lamb & sheepskins are a way for us to honor that sacrifice & to provide for the remaining flock. We appreciate your support & hope that our Icelandic lamb & sheepskins can be a cherished heirloom.
Each is uniquely individual in shape, texture, & color. We are committed to sharing as many details & helpful suggestions as possible to ensure you find the perfect sheepskin for YOU.
For a moment you’re transported to the Vikings landing in Iceland, or the Starks at Winterfell, or to Edmund entering Narnia. There is nothing like an Icelandic sheepskin to take you out of time & place. To wrap one around your shoulders is to transport yourself to a different time. They’re magical & we are happy to be able to offer a select number of them every year.
