Zola & Thoughts on Selection.
Part 2
It’s funny to me that Zola would end up at the heart of controversy, but I knew my last post on her was most likely kicking 2 hornet nests at once. It really bothered 2 groups of people & elicited the most virulent messages I’ve gotten on social media. Drawing from those comments, I’ll label the two groups: ‘You call yourself a %}* Shepherd!’ & ‘You eat your %^] Pets!’
I will say that the worst messages came from accounts I’ve never interacted with & that many of you had well thought out questions & reactions, but the fact that discussing culling or selection drew such vehemence I feel it’s good to keep discussing. I’m going to reply to the 1st group first.
This is exactly the type of shaming culture I can’t stand in homesteading. The desire for superiority usually reflects a person who is new to raising livestock, rather than seasoned. The longer you shepherd the more clearly you see that there isn’t a ‘my way, or the highway to it’. There just can’t be. It’s too dependent on your flock goals, & even more importantly the environment you’re working within. The climate, the mineral content of your soil & water, your breed, your infrastructure- they all drastically affect how you shepherd! So please be cautious of breeders, or mentors, or internet trolls, who imply there is only one way to shepherd. This has been disproved the world over for thousands of years…
Now let’s talk about my selecting. I chose to give Zola another year to lamb. To me this meant I invested the hay she ate, the minerals I gave her & my time at lambing. What I didn’t give her was a chance to adversely affect the whole flock. Let me explain (cont in comments).
I’m going to keep this on Instagram for now, but I’m so lengthy that I’m considering Substack or my blog for these in the future. Thoughts? Is reading in the comments a nuisance?
